Why convert to WAV instead of MP3?
WAV is uncompressed and lossless, making it better for audio editing where re-encoding would stack up compression artifacts. Use WAV when you plan to edit the audio further; use MP3 for final playback.
How much larger is WAV compared to MP3?
A typical 5-minute MP3 at 128 kbps is around 5 MB. The same audio as uncompressed WAV at CD quality (44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo) is about 50 MB, roughly ten times larger.
Will the audio quality be better than the original MP4?
No. The MP4 audio is already encoded with a lossy codec (usually AAC). Converting to WAV does not recover lost data; it just stops adding further compression. The WAV will be lossless from this point forward.
Does the conversion include all audio tracks from the MP4?
The first (default) audio track is extracted. Multi-track MP4 files with multiple language streams use the default track.
