JPEG compression is lossy: it discards image data that is difficult for the human visual system to perceive, allowing very small file sizes. The quality slider controls how aggressively this compression is applied. Quality 85-90 is transparent for most viewers on typical displays. Quality 70-80 produces noticeably smaller files with mild artifacts visible only on close inspection. Note that JPEG has no transparency support; transparent areas from PNG or similar sources are filled with a solid background color.

Does converting to JPEG cause quality loss?
JPEG is a lossy format. Converting from a lossless source (PNG) applies lossy compression for the first time. Converting from a lossy source (WEBP, AVIF) adds a second compression step. At quality 85+, the visual result is excellent.
What happens to transparent pixels?
JPEG does not support transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with a background color (white by default). If you need transparency preserved, use PNG or WEBP instead.
Is JPEG or PNG better for website images?
JPEG for photographs (smaller files, minor quality loss). PNG for screenshots, images with text, or graphics with transparency. WEBP outperforms both for most web use cases when browser support allows.
What quality setting should I use for social media uploads?
Social media platforms re-compress uploaded images anyway. Quality 90 is sufficient for most platform uploads; going higher does not help because the platform's own compression will apply.
