How to convert MOV to MP4

MP4 is the universal video format. Smart TVs, smartphones, browsers, social media platforms, video editing software, and streaming services all support MP4 with H.264. If your video is in a format that will not play on your TV, upload to Instagram, or open in iMovie, converting to MP4 is typically the solution. Common source formats include MKV, MOV, AVI, HEVC, WEBM, FLV, and WMV.

BoltConverter converts video files to MP4 on our servers. For formats that already contain H.264 video (like MOV or MKV), the conversion is a fast re-wrap. For formats that require re-encoding (like HEVC or AVI with Xvid), the converter uses a high-quality H.264 setting. After conversion, both files are deleted from the server immediately.

Frequently asked questions

What video formats can be converted to MP4?

BoltConverter supports converting MKV, MOV, AVI, HEVC (H.265), WebM, FLV, WMV, 3GP, M4V, MPEG, MTS, and most other common video formats to MP4.

Will there be quality loss during conversion?

For videos already encoded in H.264, re-wrapping produces no quality loss. For videos that require re-encoding (HEVC, Xvid, VP9), a small, usually imperceptible quality reduction occurs. BoltConverter uses a high-quality encoding preset.

Is there a file size limit?

Video files up to 500 MB are supported. For longer videos, consider splitting into segments before converting.

How long does conversion take?

Re-wrapping (H.264 sources) is very fast, usually under 30 seconds. Re-encoding (HEVC, AVI with legacy codecs) takes longer, roughly 1-3 minutes per minute of video.

Are my files stored on the server?

No. Both the uploaded video and the converted MP4 are deleted from our servers immediately after you download the result.
